COUNTY WICKLOW DEVELOPMENT

as an integrated part of a

GREATER DUBLIN DEVELOPMENT PLAN

County Wicklow poses a specific problem due to the mountainous terrain and the special nature of the

Wicklow National Park

At the current rate of cliff and beach erosion, it is only a matter of time before sections of this narrow sandbank with its single track railway line are swept away. It is hard to believe that in the 21st Century, highly vulnerable single track rail infrastructure located well-away from where people live and work, is still tolerated! A cost/benefit analysis will only confirm that the huge cost of adequate sea-defenses to protect the line, cannot be justified. Why not turn this track into a coastal "greenway" for walkers and cyclists?

Due to poor governance, lack of political vision and a public tolerance of 3rd world infrastructure, commuters are forced to spend hours commuting by car to Dublin. Ireland's capital city..... a mere 35 kilometres away!

How much better to build a twin track or a three track Orbital Metro Railway a kilometre inland and take commuter traffic off clogged roads.

In the Netherlands, 40% of rail commuters used bikes and the bike parks at stations. A series of commuter stations close to properly-planned settlements where people live and work, can be provided for the rapidly-increasing population.

The existing railway could then be developed as a scenic coastal Green Zone corridor for cyclists, walkers, nature-lovers and bird-watchers.

LOCAL INFRASTRUCTURE

Infrastructure is not all about Transportation and Utilities. It also includes parks, public open space and facilities that make every-day living a more pleasant experience for all of us. Redevelopment of the La Touche Hotel Site in Greystones, Co. Wicklow, now precludes the lands from being incorporated into a public park. However, the roadway on the sea side is in danger of collapse due to storm damage. Instead of just constructing a buttress wall purely to protect the road, why not consider incorporating an open theatre and pedestrian pathway? The roadway is then protected from collapse and the public have a great multi-use facility. It's called integrated thinking!!
